‘જોવા જેવી ફિલ્મ’ના ખુશખબરઃ ગર્મ હવા
પંદર-સત્તર વર્ષ પહેલાં, ઉગતી સમજણે દૂરદર્શન પર ‘ગર્મ હવા’ જોયું હતું. સ્તબ્ધ કરી દેનારો અનુભવ હતો એ! કોમવાદ, હિંદુ-મુસ્લિમ પ્રશ્ન અને બીજી ઘણી બાબતો અંગે મગજની હાર્ડ ડિસ્કનું પ્રોગ્રામિંગ માંડ શરૂ થયું હોય ત્યારે આ ફિલ્મ ભારે અસર પાડી શકે, એવું અત્યારે લાગે છે. એ વખતે એટલું સમજાયું હતું કે આ ફિલ્મમાં એક પણ ફ્રેમ નકામી નથી. તેના કેટલાક એન્ગલ- બલરાજ સાહની ચોકમાં ઊભા હોય અને ઘરના બન્ને (કે ત્રણે) માળ દેખાતા હોય અથવા બલરાજ સ્ટેશને મૂકવા ગયા હોય, તે પ્લેટફોર્મ પર ઊભા હોય અને પસાર થતી ટ્રેનનું દૃશ્ય...અને યાદગાર કવ્વાલી ‘મૌલા સલીમ ચિશ્તી’ (કામચલાઉ ધોરણે ખ્વાજા સલીમ ચિશ્તી સાંભળવી હોય તો લિન્કઃhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ilOntNHFhY )
કૈફી આઝમીએ લખેલી ને એમ.એસ.સથ્યુએ ડાયરેક્ટ કરેલી આ ફિલ્મની સીડી મેળવવા માટે ઘણા પ્રયાસ કર્યા હતા. એકાદ ઠેકાણે ટીવી પરથી વીડીયોમાં ને વીડીયો પરથી સીડીમાં ઉતરેલી નકલ મળી. પણ તેનાથી પૂરો સંતોષ થયો ન હતો.
આખરે, ગઇ કાલના ઇન્ડિયન એક્સપ્રેસની અમદાવાદ ન્યૂઝલાઇનમાં એમ.એસ.સથ્યુને ટાંકીને જણાવાયું છે કે ‘ગર્મ હવા’નું રીસ્ટોરેશન થઇ રહ્યું છે અને ટૂંક સમયમાં તે થિયેટરોમાં રિલીઝ થશે. તેની ડીવીડી પણ મળશે જ. થિયેટરમાં જોવાની તક મળે તો ન ચૂકવા જેવી અને થિયેટરમાં જોયા પછી ડીવીડી ખરીદી રાખવા જેવી ફિલ્મ.

’Garam Hawa’ is one of the most sensitively made films on the Indo-Pak partition. It doesn’t have the usual melodrama and Pak bashing. ‘Garam Hawa’ was based on an unpublished story by Ismat Chughtai and adapted for the film by Kaifi Azmi. Director M.S. Sathyu strayed away from the mainstream formula of the 70s to recreate the agonizing past that nobody had dared to touch. The film was about a Muslim family that decides to remain in India post-partition. It explores how partition affects them socially, emotionally and economically. The main protagonist, a middle aged shoe manufacturer in Agra was played by Balraj Sahni, one of the finest actors to have graced the Indian silver screen so far. Ustad Bahadur Khan evocative music helps lift the film even more. The film not only won accolades from the critics but was also lapped up by the common man. It also won the National Award that year.
